Portuguese pianist and composer Maria João Fernandes de Oliveira (b. 2004) is emerging as a distinctive voice among the new generation of European pianists, recognized for her expressive musicianship, artistic maturity, and captivating stage presence.
Alongside her activity as a performer, she is developing a distinctive identity as a composer, bringing together a deeply personal musical perspective with a broad and versatile artistic approach.
Despite her young age, Maria João has already performed extensively across Europe, appearing on concert stages and at festivals in Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Iceland, Germany, Italy, and the Czech Republic. She is currently pursuing her Bachelor's degree in Piano at the Musikhochschule Münster, Germany, under the guidance of Professor Heribert Koch.
From an early age, Maria João has distinguished herself in national and international competitions, receiving 18 prizes until de present day, including numerous first prizes. Among her most notable distinctions are the Second Prize ex aequo at the Santa Cecília Competition, First Prize at the International Piano Competition of Alto Minho, Second Prize and Revelation Prize at the Paços de Brandão Piano Competition, and First Prize and Best Interpretation of Reicha's Fugue No. 15 at the Pro Bohemia Competition in Ostrava, Czech Republic. At the 23rd edition of Pro Bohemia, she was also named Overall Winner. More recently, she received the Second Prize at the WPTA Iceland International Piano Competition and the Special Prize of the Belgian Composers' Association at the 17th Rencontres Internationales des Jeunes Pianistes in Grez-Doiceau, Belgium.
Her artistic activity has taken her to prestigious festivals and concert platforms across Europe. She has performed as a soloist at festivals including Nas Ondas in Vigo, Piano Lab in Trento, Porto Pianofest in Porto, Mensch.Musik.Festival in Münster, the Janáček Festival in Ostrava, Bendada International Music Festival in Portugal, Iceland IPC26 & Summer Festival in Reykjavík, Piano City Lecce in Italy, and the Festival de Piano Serra da Estrela.
As a soloist, Maria João has also collaborated with renowned conductors including Cezar Nuñez Perez, Jan Wierzba, Henrique Constância, and Peter Sauerwein, performing with orchestras such as the Junges Sinfonie Orchester Aachen (JSO), Orquestra Sinfónica ARTEAM, Sociedade Musical Banda Lanhelense, and the BIMF String Orchestra.
Her artistic development has been supported by several institutions and scholarship programmes. She is currently a scholarship holder of LMN Münsterland and the Pro Talent Deutschlandstipendium at the University of Münster, and has also received merit scholarships from the Fundação GDA.
Alongside her career as a pianist, composition has become an increasingly important part of Maria João's artistic identity. She finds particular inspiration in the creative process, and several of her original works have already been performed publicly in Portugal and Germany. Her growing engagement with composition reflects her desire to explore music not only as an interpreter, but also as a creator of her own artistic language.
In 2026, Maria João recorded her debut studio album "Color Album", featuring exclusively her own compositions. The project represents an important milestone in the development of her artistic voice, bringing together her identities as pianist and composer in a deeply personal musical statement.
Maria João Fernandes de Oliveira continues to develop her career across Portugal and Germany, with upcoming solo recitals and performances as a soloist with orchestra in Portugal scheduled for 2027. With an increasingly international profile and a growing presence both on the concert stage and as a composer, she is establishing herself as a compelling young artist with a distinctive and evolving musical identity.
